About me

Hi! I’m Ashley, owner and behaviorist at Purrfect Companion.

My love for cats and experience volunteering with animal shelters has driven me to a career in cat behavior.

I have a degree in communications and background in learning and development, and much of that translates to helping cat owners!

Cats are trainable, though you have probably heard otherwise. It takes an understanding of how cats think to diminish unwanted behaviors and live peacefully with your furry friends.

Often, you need to be able to meet your cat where they’re at. Will this sometimes result in placing a litter box where it’s inconvenient for you? Absolutely. Is it worth the peace of mind that you won’t need to replace your carpet every two years or try to rid your house of the cat pee smell before company comes over? I’ll let you be the judge of that.

I love working with owners who are willing to put the time and patience in to understand their cats. Some cats will adapt to the first thing we suggest! Other cats will need all of the tools in our toolbox. I’ll work with you to find a resolution in your relationship and can make additional recommendations when needed.

YOU, as the cat owner, need to be invested in their training. There is no one size fits all approach. Before committing please ask yourself if you are willing to put the time and effort into addressing your cat’s issues. It will require work on your part. I can give you the knowledge and tools, but only you can decide how you are going to use them to create the best solution for your cat!

I adhere to most ethical way to train your pet and focus on positive reinforcement to diminish unwanted behaviors. I follow LIMA practices in accordance with IAABC standards. LIMA stands for “least intrusive, minimally aversive”.

Positive reinforcement includes using high-value treats or rewards to reinforce good behavior, making it more likely for the cat to perform that behavior in the future.

I do not believe in punishing unwanted behaviors by using fear or intimidation. It does not make the behavior less likely to occur. This includes raising your voice, spraying with water, rubbing their nose in their urine or feces, or anything else that can cause fear, pain or startling.
